Minnesota Wintertime & Date Night

Happy Hump day everyone!!  Not long ago I posted about how hard this time of year can be…for me in particular.  Not being able to spend days outside really takes a toll on me more than I realize!  Well, this weekend I got a big dose of the great outdoors and it was fantastic.  I decided that there is no reason (if the weather isn’t arctic that is) that I can’t bundle up myself and the little guy and head out in the cold for short spurts at a time.  So, we did some research on some fun winter activities to do while my mom was in town and we found more than a few ideas.  We put on our winter clothes, bundled up the little guy, and hit the road!

On Saturday we headed to downtown St. Paul, MN for their annual Winter Carnival.  Check out their website here.  This year, because the Super Bowl is also in town, the Winter Carnival is boasting a giant ice castle that you can go see right downtown.  The ice castle is surrounded by food vendors, markets, contests, activities for all ages, and ice sculptures.  We had so much fun cruising around the ice castle, watching the autonomous snowplow competition, and eating mini donuts.   When we had enough of the cold we ducked into the public library to read some books, warm up, and check out the activities that they had going on.  It was a perfect day!

Saturday night, me and my one and only got to go out to dinner just the two of us!  This is huge as it hasn’t happened for months and it was much needed!  Grandma stayed to play and put the little one to bed and we headed to our favorite sushi joint to spend some time alone.  We had a lovely time and ate wayyyyy too much sushi.  Afterwards we met up with some friends that we haven’t seen in ages for a few drinks too.  Such a lovely evening.

On Sunday before Grandma left town we headed to check out the Super Bowl Live festivities in downtown Minneapolis.  Downtown has been completely transformed to accommodate the influx of visitors and to show off what this great state has to offer.  There were lots of places to shop, eat, listen to music, take photos, and people watch.  The Target Bullseye Lodge (thank you Target!) was giving out hot cocoa and marshmallows with your picture printed on them and selling lots of cool  #boldnorth gear.  You can play hockey, taste test some new products, and we even got to try out curling for the first time!  How fun is that!  Here is a little GIF of our little family doing some curling 😃

Overall it was so much fun and if you are in the area for the big game then you should definitely check out their website and make some plans to go.  There is something for everyone!

Anyways, it was great having my mom in town and it was super great to be able to get out of the house with the temps being a little warmer.  I hope we can get out this coming weekend for a bit too but with arctic temps in the forcast I am not sure how long we will last!

What do you do in the winter to get outside by yourself, with friends, or with little ones?  I’d love to know!
